Value to be Unlocked Real-World Assets (RWAs) in Nepal

On July 19, 2024, eSatya hosted its 43 meetup on the topic Real-World Assets (RWAs) with support from HamroLifebank. This networking event brought together professionals from diverse backgrounds, including banking, finance, and related industries, to explore the innovative concept of RWA tokenization.

The session, supported by HamroLifebank, offered a comprehensive exploration of RWA tokenization, featuring two distinguished speakers: Rajat Rajbhandari, CIO & Co-founder of dexFreight, and Santosh Shrestha, CTO & Co-founder of Rumsan Associates. Moderated by Dristi Piya, Director of HamroLifebank, the discussion delved into the concept of RWAs, including their definition, benefits, creation process, and the innovative aspect of tokenization, with a special focus on supply chain invoices.

Key takeaways from the event:

  • Increased Transparency: Blockchain offers a decentralized and transparent approach to asset management, addressing historical issues with tracking and valuing assets.

  • Enhanced Market Liquidity: Tokenization enables fractional ownership and easier trading, which can boost market liquidity and allow broader investor participation.

  • Challenges to Address: Adoption of RWA tokenization faces hurdles such as regulatory compliance, custodial integrity, and technological robustness.

The event kicked off with an insightful presentation by Santosh Shrestha. He addressed the 2008 financial crisis and its significant impact due to difficulties in tracking and valuing mortgage-backed securities. Shrestha explained that the 2008 crisis highlighted the need for more transparent and decentralized systems, which sparked interest in blockchain technology as a solution.

Blockchain technology supports the tokenization of Real-World Assets like real estate, bonds, and stocks, enabling faster transactions, fractional ownership, and near-instant settlement times. Shrestha highlighted how tokenization could boost market liquidity in Nepal by dividing large assets into smaller, tradable tokens, allowing more investors to participate and driving economic growth.

Despite its potential, the widespread adoption of RWA tokenization faces several challenges. Key issues include regulatory compliance, custodial integrity, and technological robustness. Shrestha emphasized the need for collaboration among governments, financial institutions, and technology providers to develop a secure and trustworthy regulatory framework. Essential practices include proof of reserve, periodic audits, and the involvement of reputable custodians to maintain the integrity of tokenized assets.

Real-World Examples

Following Shrestha’s presentation, Rajat Rajbhandari explored real-world pilot projects and regulatory landscapes. He highlighted case studies like Project Guardian in Singapore, showcasing a collaborative approach between regulators and financial institutions to explore RWA tokenization. He highlighted case studies like Project Guardian in Singapore, where regulators and financial institutions are collaborating to explore RWA tokenization. These pilot projects are creating interoperable networks and protocols for token issuance and trading, paving the way for wider adoption.

The session concluded with an engaging Q&A segment. Participants discussed the differences between RWAs and traditional derivatives and explored how blockchain technology could enhance centralized financial systems. The tokenization of real-world assets is poised to transform traditional finance by leveraging the transparency, security, and efficiency of blockchain technology, opening new opportunities for investment and economic involvement. As more pilot projects are developed and discussions continue, the financial landscape is set to become more inclusive and dynamic, marking the beginning of a new era in digital asset management.

This meetup offered a comprehensive overview of RWA tokenization, focusing on its potential applications in Nepal. The insights shared by industry leaders underscored the transformative impact of blockchain technology on asset management and investment, setting the stage for a more inclusive and innovative financial ecosystem.
